Orthodontists & Orthodontics Treatments in Brooklyn
What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is the use of dental techniques and devices to help correct the positioning of malpositioned teeth and jaws. Correcting the positioning of teeth not only helps improve the appearance of the smile, but it can also help improve oral hygiene and bite. Orthodontic devices, which can be removable or fixed to the teeth, are designed to apply soft and gradual pressure to the teeth and jaws and come in a variety of options. At Ralph Avenue Dental Care, we provide the following high-quality family orthodontic services in Brooklyn, New York:
- Invisalign Teen
- Traditional metal braces
- Clear braces
- Fast Braces
- Self-ligating braces
Why is orthodontic treatment used?
Orthodontic treatment is used to help treat various imperfections in the positioning of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment may be used to help correct:
- Overbites — top teeth protrude farther out than the lower teeth
- Underbites — top teeth protrude too far back or bottom teeth protrude too far out
- Openbites — gap between the top and bottom teeth when the top and bottom back teeth meet
- Crossbites — top and bottom teeth do not meet correctly
- Gaps — irregular spacing between teeth
- Overcrowding — too many teeth occupy the same area
- Misplaced midline — center of the top teeth and the center of the bottom teeth are not evenly aligned with each other
What does orthodontic treatment involve?
Depending on the method used, orthodontic treatment may vary.
Invisalign involves a series of custom-made trays that fit over your teeth. The trays are clear, removable, and are designed to slowly correct the positioning of your teeth over time, with each sequential tray in the series being slightly straighter than the one before it. Invisalign Teen works in ways that are similar to Invisalign, but with the dental needs of teens in mind.
Traditional metal braces involve the use of metal brackets that are fixed onto the teeth. A metal wire, known as an archwire, is then strung through the brackets. The archwire will help put pressure on the teeth and shift them into their new positions. Rubber bands, also known as ligatures, may be placed around each bracket. These bands can help influence which direction the tooth moves and help keep the archwire in place. Your dentist may also allow you to choose the color of your bands.
Fastbraces® work similar to traditional braces by brackets to the teeth and connecting them with a wire. However, unlike traditional metal braces, Fastbraces utilizes a treatment technology that realigns the root and crown of a tooth at the same time, allowing for teeth to straighten at a quicker rate than with traditional braces.
Self-ligating braces work the same way as traditional metal braces minus the ligatures or rubber bands around the metal bracket. Similar to traditional braces, self-ligating braces will involve your dentist fixing metal brackets to each tooth. A metal wire, known as an archwire, is then strung through each bracket.
