Few dental procedures seem to cause as much anxiety as tooth extractions. Between secondhand horror stories, television and movie portrayals, and outdated information floating around online, it’s no wonder so many patients feel anxious at the mere thought of having a tooth removed. All of that said, the good news is, most of what you’ve heard probably isn’t true! Here are some of the most common tooth extraction myths, busted.
Myth #1. Tooth Extractions Are Extremely Painful
While the idea of losing a tooth might sound painful, modern dentistry has made it so that tooth extractions are virtually pain-free. Beforehand, your dentist will thoroughly numb the area so you feel no discomfort during the procedure itself, though it’s normal to feel a small amount of gentle pressure. And while some soreness during recovery is normal, it’s typically manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers.
Myth #2. Tooth Extractions Are Only Performed During Emergencies
It’s true that tooth extractions often overlap with emergency situations, but that is not the only time when a tooth may benefit from being removed. Extractions are also commonly performed for reasons like overcrowding, impacted wisdom teeth, or baby teeth that haven’t fallen out on their own. Whatever the reason, your dentist will always explain exactly why an extraction is being recommended before moving forward.
Myth #3. Extracted Teeth Don’t Need to Be Replaced
While it’s true that certain teeth do not need to be replaced, like wisdom teeth or teeth that are being removed prior to orthodontic or restorative treatments, it’s unwise to leave a gap in your smile. Skipping tooth replacement can lead to bigger problems down the road, including shifting teeth, bite misalignment, and even bone loss in the jaw. If your dentist has recommended extraction, they’ll likely also want to talk about replacing the tooth and which solution might be best.
Myth #4. Recovering from a Tooth Extraction Takes a Long Time
Some patients assume they’ll be sidelined for a month or two following an extraction, but this is not the case at all. Most people start feeling significantly better within about three to five days, especially when they follow aftercare instructions like using a cold compress, eating soft foods, and avoiding strenuous activity. Surgical extractions, such as removing an impacted tooth, may take a bit longer to heal fully, but you shouldn’t expect to be out of commission for more than a week or two.
The bottom line is, tooth extractions don’t deserve the reputation they often get. With modern techniques and proper aftercare, the process is far more comfortable and straightforward than these myths suggest!
