How to Use Denture Adhesive the Right Way

Dentures have come a long way over the years, offering a comfortable and natural-looking way to restore your smile after tooth loss. Even so, many patients find that their dentures could use a little extra stability throughout the day, which is where denture adhesive comes in handy. But if you’ve never used it before, the process can feel a little intimidating. Here’s a closer look at some signs you might need to use denture adhesive, along with how to apply and remove it correctly.

Why You Should Use Denture Adhesive

Not every denture wearer ends up needing to wear adhesive, but there are a few telltale signs that you might benefit from it. If your dentures shift while you’re eating or speaking, feel loose throughout the day, or irritate rubbing against your gums, adhesive may help hold them more securely in place.

This will allow you to eat all kinds of food with ease and will also help your dentures to simply feel more comfortable during the day while you’re wearing them. Plus, some patients also find that using adhesive gives them extra confidence in social situations, reducing the worry that their dentures might slip—a priceless benefit on its own!

Applying Your Denture Adhesive

You should begin by thoroughly cleaning and drying your dentures, since adhesive won’t stick well if they’re wet or dirty. Rinse your mouth as well to remove any leftover food particles or bacteria. From there, apply a small amount of adhesive in short strips or dots along the ridge of the denture base, but avoid overdoing it. Then, simply press your dentures firmly into place inside your mouth and hold for a few seconds to allow the adhesive to set. Remember, using too much adhesive can actually cause more shifting and a messier cleanup, so it’s best to start light and add more only if needed.

Removing Your Denture Adhesive

When you’re removing your dentures at the end of the day, it’s important to remove the adhesive before soaking your dentures for the night. Start by gently rocking your dentures back and forth to loosen them rather than pulling them straight out. Once removed, rinse your mouth with warm water to clear away any adhesive residue left on your gums, and use a soft cloth or your finger to gently wipe away any remaining bits. For your dentures themselves, use a soft-bristled brush and a denture-specific cleaner to remove any leftover adhesive from the base. Just be sure to steer clear of hot water or harsh cleaning products, as these can warp or damage your restoration.

All in all, using denture adhesive can make a real difference in the comfort and function of your dentures, both of which help you to feel confident about your new smile!
