Dentures are one of the best and most well-known ways of restoring missing teeth, but just like your natural pearly whites, these restorations can become stained over time without proper cleaning. In fact, even the most well-made dentures are not immune to discoloration from certain foods, drinks, and habits. The good news is that with the right care, you can keep them looking white and bright as the day you got them! Here’s what you need to know about denture stains and some useful tips for preventing them.

Why Do Dentures Become Stained?

The materials used to create dentures, while durable, are slightly porous, meaning they can absorb pigments from what you eat and drink. The gum-colored portions typically contain tiny, non-visible holes that can harbor food particles and bacteria.

Coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, and tomato-based sauces are just a few of the many common culprits responsible for stained teeth and dentures alike. Smoking or chewing tobacco can also cause stubborn yellow or brown stains that are difficult to remove. A good rule of thumb is that anything that could stain your natural teeth is likely to stain your dentures, especially if you’re not taking care of them.

Tips for Preventing Denture Stains

Keeping your dentures stain-free is easier when you make a few simple habits an everyday part of your routine. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Clean your dentures every day by brushing them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive denture cleanser. Never use plain old toothpaste!
  • Rinse your dentures off after finishing each meal or even after snacking; this helps to wash away stain-causing particles before they can settle in.
  • Soak your dentures overnight in a dentist-approved solution, or even just room-temperature water, to keep them moist and free from buildup.
  • Limit stain-causing foods and drinks, or at least try to rinse your mouth immediately after consuming them.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups so that your dentist can inspect your dentures, check their fit, and provide a professional cleaning.

Taking great care of your dentures won’t just keep them sparkling clean—the habit will also ensure that oral health problems don’t creep up on you! Even though they replace your natural teeth, any remaining teeth, as well as the rest of your mouth, is still at risk if you don’t stay on track with your hygiene.
