How to Remove Your Invisalign Aligners Like a Pro

If you’ve just started your Invisalign journey, you’ve probably already discovered that sometimes, getting those trays out isn’t particularly easy. While Invisalign aligners are designed to fit snugly over your teeth, which is exactly what makes them so effective, it can also make removing them feel awkward or even frustrating at first. The good news is, it gets easier with practice, and there are some simple tricks that can make a big difference right away.

Start from the Back, Not the Front

One of the most common mistakes new Invisalign wearers make is trying to pry their trays off from the front teeth first. However, this approach makes removal much harder than it needs to be!  Instead, begin at the back molars on one side of your mouth. Use your fingertip to gently hook underneath the edge of the aligner and push it away from your back teeth. Once you’ve loosened it on one side, work your way to the other side, then carefully ease the tray away from your front teeth last.

Use an Aligner Removal Tool

These small, inexpensive tools are designed specifically to hook under the edge of your tray and pop it loose without requiring you to fumble around with your fingernails. They’re easy to find online or at many pharmacies, and they’re small enough to keep in a pocket or purse for on-the-go removal. Remember to be careful when using an aligner hook to prevent gum or tooth injury, as well as aligner damage.

Clean Aligners Are Easier to Remove

Believe it or not, how clean your aligners are can affect how easily they come out. Saliva and bacteria can create a suction effect between the aligner and your teeth, especially if the trays haven’t been rinsed or cleaned regularly. Making it a habit to rinse your aligners with water each time you remove and reinsert them helps reduce buildup and keeps that suction effect to a minimum. Gently brushing them with a soft-bristled toothbrush also helps maintain a clean fit that’s easier to work with throughout the day.

Be Patient and Don’t Rush

When Invisalign trays are brand new, they fit extra tightly because your teeth haven’t yet begun to shift. As the days progress and your teeth adjust, you’ll typically notice that the same set of trays becomes progressively easier to remove. So if a fresh set feels nearly impossible to get out on day one, be patient and stay the course! Also, never use sharp objects like scissors or metal tools to pry out your aligners, as this can crack or warp the tray and potentially injure your gums. You should avoid pulling straight down on the tray with full force, too, which can cause the plastic to warp or break.
